OMG! I'm commenting on my own story to say I cannot believe I thought that when Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, my ancestors would announce to all the people they enslaved that they were free to go! Of course, not. I am into March 1863 in the plantation journal and the enslaved people are still there doing forced labor. My great grandfather and great grandmother did not tell them!
